So what are the 'essential'/recommended pieces of equipment needed for commuting? I've got:

Rain/wind proof jacket
Base Layer
Cycling jersey
Lycra shorts
Gloves
Lights
Cycling shoes
Bag
Bottle, lock, pump, puncture repair kit
....and obviously a bike with two wheels

Anything important that I've missed out on for a daily 20 mile round trip commute?

A wallet and/or £10 coins wrapped up in tape hidden in the bottom of your puncture repair kit....or somewhere

Oh, and as mentioned on here a week or so ago, a small pair of pliers (for getting glass, nails, screws etc out of tyres.

As a warning - also with a 20m round trip, shopping around, I found it very hard to find a rain proof jacket that was warm, or a wind proof jacket that was waterproof. Both LBSs I visited concurred with that.
So I ended up buying both. Sheesh - this stuff don't come cheap!

It's a good idea to look for jackets that have a degree of hi-vis stripes on them.
