You speak truth, Ketka82uk.

It takes me half an hour to get from Crystal palace to Lambeth bridge, and then 20 minutes to trickle through the dense matter that is London north of the river. I have realised that this is an average of about 15 mph to the river and 9 after the river. I stop at red lights. I give peds priority at zebra crossings.

I'm like you Twanger. I'm just having a pootle to or from work and not trying to break any land speed records. I still get passed by old ladies with wicker baskets (there is one old girl who goes like stink!).

I don't have any cycle computer doodads to work things out so it's very much ish on my calculations.

Well thanks to a service from my LBS have just in one day wiped off nearly 10 minutes on my commute so know officially at least 13mph average. Does this mean i cant contribute to this thread anymore??

And the missus just got me a wireless cycle computer. But havent put that on yet.

Got myself a new bike - switched to Ridgeback Meteor from an old and heavy mountain bike. I didn't think it'll make a huge difference to my commuting time, yet when I arrived at work this morning, it turned out I'm 15 minutes early. And that means my journey takes as long as it would on the public transport (but it's far more pleasant). Yay!

For me it depends which bike im on.

Road bike i generally commute 14 miles at an average of 18-19 mph

Mountain bike is use a slighty different route only 10 miles but about 40% off road and manage 14 mph.

Dont often get passed, but the other day i was on my road bike and was ticking along nicely at exactly 28.8mph when i was passed by a guy in full time trial rig. He passed me as though i was standing still!

Only been recording daily statistics for the last couple of weeks. Got a 'PB' last week though based on journey to work:

11.2 miles / 36:31mins, which was an average speed of 18.4mph.

It takes me roughly half an hour in to work, I don't tend to time the homeward stretch (which is slightly uphill). It took me a good 45 mins at first though, only been doing this 2 1/2 months now. Distance is 5.3 miles or so (says online maps), so that makes me a shade over 10 mph. With lots of traffic lights.

PB would have been this morning, it was under 30 mins, but the best part was that I 'beat' a car in - halfway through my commute I have a TJ right, and I noticed the car turning next to me was a particular (noticable) car. Even with one or two dodgy traffic lights (stopped @ them all), I made it in to work just in time to see the car drive past the office! Most impressed with myself....

I cycle from the City to Crystal Palace. The route is about 10 miles and I do it in about 45 mins. So average os 13.3mph.

Up until Elephant and Castle though I average around 16mph, it the London bit with all the traffic lights that slow me down. I never go through reds, unlike every other cyclist on my route.

Now officially ( well once i got my wireless sensor about 0.00001m away from the magnet) did my first measured commute in at average of 14.1mph. Was 15.1mph before hitting central london. Max of 34mph downhill 28 straight

Now to beat it!

I took the computer off my commuter when I stopped using it as my training bike. I can't remember my averages but it would be just under 30 minutes for 8 miles and just under 40 for 12 miles. Still, I'm glad I don't have the computer on it anymore. The commute just serves as a means to get base miles in and keep the legs turning. Even so, I can't remember the last time anyone caught and overtook me.

When I want PB's and speed I find the weekly TT, chaingang or race usually serve my interests. In any one of which I often find my average going over 25mph, which rather eliminates the need for speed on the commute.
