This maybe a complete stupid question, apologies in advance.

I have a 14-speed road bike; I believe that this is made up of 7 rings at the back and 2 at the front (chain set I think its called).

but there are actually 3 rings at the front. I assume that the larger one isn't meant to be used, but I can actually get the chain onto this which would give me 48 teeth ie a faster gear.

Should I be using this?

Hope this makes sense. Aint riden a bike for years and just bought my first road bike

Your bike is a 21 speed. Yes you can use the large front ring.

I think you have 21 speed bike, hence the 3 at the front.

Of course you can use them, except strictly speaking, the chain won't enjoy crossing from the big at the front to the big at the back or small to small.

Apart from that - PLF!
