Hi,

I've only taken up riding in the last few months (340miles so far in about 25 hours) I have an old Ridgeback Adventure 501CS Hybrid bike that I acquired for free and using for 8 mile return commute on days that I can.

Last week I popped into Bicicielo in Birmingham (if you are anywhere near pop in - friendly staff and lovely bikes) I couldn't believe the weight of some of the bikes there! Amazing!

There is no way I'd be able to get permission from SWMBO to blow over 3k on a bike. But I could probably sneak some upgrades past her.

Is it at all feasible to completely replace this bike in stages say over a year or so, keeping it rideable and end up with something half decent.

So start with wheels, then seat and bars and gears, crank, forks and frame.

Would that be possible? Would modern parts fit?

Wheels, tyres and quality brake pads are probably the single biggest improvement you could make to any bike.

If you want a faster, nicer to ride bike, I would look at getting an old 531 frame and build it up with decent components as you can afford it.

I have the same bike and have been riding it for a couple of years, although since getting a road bike it is getting less use. It is an entry level bike but very good at that end of the market, however I wouldn't have thought it worth doing too much to in the way of modifications. Keep it as a knock around bike and do as has been suggested and find a bike that is worth spending out on to get what you want.
