Increases can be quite dramatic and breathtaking. 50 miles used to be a challenge, now it is a training ride. I remember being impressed with a 32 mile ride, now that sort of distance is a utility ride.
This year I went from 70 miles at the start of the year to 140 by now.

I'd agree with the above. Riding with friends or in a group really makes the miles shift, and if you add in a cake or bacon buttie stop and a good hill with a stunning view on top, then it becomes more of a pleasure.

Well done ivebeen at it 4 weeks now done a few 30 plus rides and a 48 miler that felt like at lot more due to the hills got my first 50 plus in a few weeks for charity

really enjoying this thread as i started last week and managed 10 miles today which i'm really chuffed about, i was wondering what is a reasonable rate of progress, i'm 54 and reasonably fit and my weight is about right.

Yes I am enjoying it too. I also only started again a few weeks ago , 20 is the most I have done in one day so far I am 50 and erm.....heavy, but basically ok. If I don't get work tomorrow I have a chance to go out as my two boys are with there Grandmother.

what do u think is a reasonable rate of progress, should i focus on doing 10 miles comfortably before increasing.

I don't know, I am a returning Newbie. I would say just do what feels good, if after a few trips at 10 miles your not worn out, increase the distance or effort you put in. I am sure there is someone better qualified to answer on here than me.
Just enjoy and slowly increase effort and distance.

Congratulations.

I have just started to commute the 12 miles or so into work and from work (24 miles a day) . It has been taking me 45mins to an hour depending on the wind so I know I'm averaging 12 MPH plus. I'm hoping to get the commute time down though as I can still find myself slowing down below a speed I feel 'acceptable' .

Will working harder on a short ride help me go further on a more steady paced ride?

I'm not the most qualified person able to answer this here, but I reckon everyone has a different rate of progression. I took it easy at first and explored what my limits were. Once I found them I decided to gradually increase my miles by maybe adding in a 15 miler at the end of a week of 10's. If your in decent health I suspect you'll be able to gain miles in a similar way, even if you up it every two weeks or so!

I went out today, following my previous 34 mile ride and felt pretty worn if I'm honest. I did my old 20 mile hilly route and will probably edge away with another 30 miler towards the end of this week ;) One step at a time!

I'd say no, go for the bigger distances now. You never get comfortable by continuing at the same distance - your body gets used to just surviving your longest ride. To get comfortable at 10, you need to ride 20.
