Compression baselayer or just a simple base layer?

With spring knocking on the door it's time to hang up the winter leggings and jacket.

Question is what's the difference between compression base layers and standard base layers?

Never had anything like this when I used to play rugby so well and truly out of the loop.

I am not wanting to spend loads but want a pair of leggings and long sleeve top to wear under cycling shorts and jersey just to keep the chill off until it's shorts all the way.

I used a Nike pro combat compression SS base layer in spring/Autumn but as soon as its time to hang up the thermal bibtights then it's time for standard bibshorts for me.

Same as above for me, used a gore bike wear base layer which is very fitted. Soon switching back to bib shorts. There is alot of cheap as new second hand gear on ebay just be careful what you buy as some is fake from outside the UK.

I find the aldi and lidl stuff more base layer with a little compression but great for wicking sweat due to the material.
Cheap at £10 for long sleeve tops or leggings and comfortable.
you can get short sleeve or shorts cheaper too.
Sondico stuff from sports direct is more compression and less wicking but I find the leggings great if my legs are aching for recovery.
About £12 each for them and they also do short sleeve and shorts.

oh tops I find good if I get back pain and i drink plenty of milk rather than that rip off bottled crap

Try decathlon, I wear one of their string vest type base layers all summer , their long and short sleeved ones always seem to be in the sale too, when you start looking at fancy shoes try their white carbon soled ones cheap and very good quality , there's one at lakeside and Harlow

Sports Direct Sondico compression baselayers - I've got several, long and short sleeved.
You really cannot go wrong for the money.

For cycling I prefer the aldi/lidl stuff as it wicks sweat and keeps you warm. The sondico gear is great for recovery or really cold weather and has mesh vents at armpits etc but a bit boil in the bag elsewhere in spring or autumn weather. Both good kit for the money either way though.
My son does a lot of running and boxing and has shin splints so I'm going to look if sondico do the compression shin guards .

since the op plays rugby I'm surprised he hasn't come across compression wear in training and warm ups.
You might be pressed to find base layers at aldi or lidl now as its usually in their specials late summer through to winter.

I have a few from lidl/aldi and some are better than others. They do them for skiing, cycling, motorcyclists, etc and some tops are long body and some come up short and ride up.

Have a look in sports direct though. As northern dave said the sondico is good ;)

I think leg warmers are a great option for Spring/Autumn, particularly for commuting as they are easy to pocket for the warmer return journey.

I have 2 pairs from Madison and Specialised. The Madison ones are much better as they have substantial grippers at the top to hold them up.

For the top layer you can't beat Helly Henson.

I gave up on the Aldi stuff this winter due to it not being warm enough when it got damp from sweat.. Went back to my Helly Hansen stuff, much better.

I ended up getting a cheap base layer from eBay basic dri fit one for 5.99 which I wore for the first time today.

I tired on a couple of compression tops and to be honest with my larger frame it just felt uncomfortable. So went for a large in this dri fit and it's perfect not to tight but tight enough to feel like I have some form of compression.

May have to get a couple more.
