They are just ok. Pop Garmin in the search box as there's loads of threads about them. For full independent reviews of Garmins put DCRainmaker into google. What he doesnt know about Garmin isnt worth talking about. . General concensous is that Wahoo is the way to go.

Clearly depends on what you want it for. I have a Garmin etrex 30x which does everything I want.
Free, readily-available, OpenStreetMap-based maps are easily loaded.
Records where I go. Tracks can be downloaded to follow if desired.
Shows speed, distance, average speed, elevation, total climb, etc.
Does not measure heart rate or cadence - but I’m not interested.
Controlled by buttons not touch screen, so I can use wearing several pairs of gloves (as in recent weather).
Uses replaceable AA batteries.
Upload and download is via usb, but that’s enough for me.

Plenty of other garmin models I understand, that I assume match most of the above (but maybe not control buttons and AA batteries).
I have to admit that, prior to joining cyclechat, I’d never heard of wahoo.

I had a Garmin edge for about 6 years and it was excellent. It finally gave up earlier this year, I think water got in through the USB port after many rides in the rain. I bought a Lezyne Macro earlier this year and it's very good, hoping it will last as long as the Garmin did.
