Not heard of this before so looked at Marks link to the explanation.

So you find something you want on line but don't buy it there and go and buy it via another company. First company loses out as they are spending money on internet marketing with no sale from it and second company gains as a sale drops in their lap so they split the commission with the punter.

This is a bit like going down the LBS, trying out the bikes choosing one and then buying it on Wiggle as Wiggle is £5 less.

Surely also the cashback firm is busy selling your details to make some more from the deal?
I think its more to do with companies paying for a sale and an inbetween company splitting the amount with you. You are still purachsing from the original company

For example, if your LBS gave a £10 cashbackoffer. You wanted a bike, I said to you, buy the bike using the telephone number I give you to the same LBS for the full price. I then get the £10 cash back and split it with you.

EDIT Its a bit like the commission this site gets here. CC gets, I don;t know, maybe 5% on each sale if bought through these links. These companies do the same thing where they charge you to join and split the 5% back with you.
