I bought a job lot of bikes, mostly for the Moulton, but as I began sorting out the others I became co fused by this old Raleigh. I believe the SA hub dates to 1939 but the frame number doesnt seem to tally with any particular year. It is udentical to most 1930s Sports models as far as I can see and was originally green I think.

The frame looks much more modern, 50's onwards maybe? The "all steel" model rings a bell...... Its just those cutout head tube lugs.

I thought 50s frames had an alpha numeric SN. This only has a 6 digit several.number.
I'm.more confused now.

Geometry doesn't look slack enough to be pre-war, IMHO.
I would agree with you but i think the bikes just pre-war were same as those made into the 50s.
It's fairly early having a grease port on the crank case I think. My 49 sports doesn't have this.

The burgundy Raleigh next to it and the Dawes look rather interesting too.....
I admit I am a bit biased since all my proper British built machines are Raleigh and Dawes! I don't include the far-east skip salvage ones, those are just hacks.

The burgundy one is a Currys bike. I havnt got round to looking at that yet. They came in a job lot I bought, 4 dawes a Moulton and loads of 20" hobbies. All to be sold probably but a couple are growing on me already.
