Hi - can someone please explain to me, as a newbie to cycling, why the sign that means no cycling, doesn't have a line through it? All we have is a picture of a cycle in a circle with a red border. Why isn't it more clearly defined? I have seen lots of cyclists ignoring this sign anyway.

I thought that was a 'be aware of cyclist' sign

Or is that the triangle one?:unsure:

White signs with a circular red border are prohibition signs.
Whatever is in the circular red border is prohibited.

As a road user it may be worth getting a copy of the highway code and reading it, it contains a lot of useful information about signs and legislation.

What he said....

There are various ones that don't have a line through the circle.

A lot of the problems are not the actual signs, but their use.

We have on place locally where there is a marked cycle track and a blue "Cycling permitted" and a "No cycling" sign on the same post!

margaret Calvert was interviewed as part of the secret life of motorways series on BBC4 a few years back . wonderful character. All the sign changes came from the worboys report into road signage.. SABRE is a good website to peruse if you have a highways curiosity.

We have one path very close to me, red circle with bike so "no Cycling" at one end, but coming the other way - it's a blue "shared use" (pedestrian + cyclist) sign.
There is something similar near me: http://tinyurl.com/c6mcm33
Only in this case, the sign is for the same stretch of road.

What does the wording say beneath? I suspect that is telling cyclists on a shared-use path to rejoin the road.
