It must be a 'wired in' thing laying dormant from one's youth, but who else, even in our mature years, is tempted to stop to pick up shiny, freshly fallen conkers even there's little likelyhood of you using them for their 'proper purpose' - ? Obviously it's a man thing, but are you - ? :wahhey:

Bloody lethal under tyre too.

As this is in general cycling rather than cafe, I'd say avoid the dreadful things while on the bike!

I haven't played conkers for years ^_^ when our lad were small they collected cokers but weren't interested in playing, we would end up with bags of conkers stuffed in the back of drawer, usually mouldy by the time they were found.

I haven't seen one yet on the streets of West London, but when they start falling, there are loads of them. I winged one last year and it went boingh into a car door so hard that it probably caused a dent. @srw can give us the insurance position.

I ride through the grounds of Caldicot castle pretty often, always scan the conkers on the ground at this time of year and take a couple home with me... nostalgia probably. Had my two year old grandson collecting a few recently, he was giggling and having fun. Children would probably be obliged to wear safety glasses, face shields and gloves if they ever wanted to play conkers these days...

Put a bagful in the bike shed. It'll keep the spiders away.

My mum reckoned this was true for years, and I routinely laughed at her, how is a spider meant to be scared of a conker FFS?

I was right too, especially when she found a spider perched on a conker sat by a windowsill.

I have never heard such a thing - since when did conkers ward off spiders?

Sounds like something from the back of a Dark Ages alamanac.
