Salt and sugar are right, nasties can't grow there.

I always think that anything very spicy is okay for a while too, it does seem that anything with hot chilli, (like an encona chilli sauce) will be good for a few months in the fridge even if open. Bacteria don't seem to like that spicyness somehow.

I didn't think cooking oil would go off.................... Until I made a stir fry and it tasted a bit ropey. On checking the "best before" date on the oil I had used, it was over 2 years out of date. No ill effects though, just tasted yeeeuch .

I found a lump of Afghan black in a box of old audio leads and bits and bobs a few weeks back.

It must have been there for a good fifteen years and it was a bit dried out - do you reckon it's still OK to smoke it?

Probably not - send it to me, I'll get an ultra-thick slab of Jamaican vinyl on the turntable, 'skin a fat one' on the cover and get right back to you

Trust me Longers, I'm right on this one. Just don't ask me how I know

How do you know???

There's probably a perfectly rational (and utterly boring) explanation for all this... :tired:

I figured you had a 1 in 7 chance of being right ... but could only be bothered to check one packet of crisps ... and you are right ... they are best before next Sat (better finish them off quick  ).

Just went to check a bag of Walkers in the larder.
Best by date is 08/01/11... a Saturday

just checked the Monster munch packet from yesterday (ok not exactly a crisp) - out of date 1/1/11 - a Saturday

I just checked a pack of Polish Krakus paprika crisps - 5/2/11 - so it's a Saturday there as well!

... you lot have got too much time on your hands.

All we need to do now is find out why it's always a saturday.

IIRC its got something to do with pubs having stock rotation on a Friday. The exceptions to this are the 'own brand' crisps found in shops. Obviously these aren't sold in pubs.

Sugar has no sell-by/use by/best before date, because it doesn't go off.
[/quote]

That's odd, so how come I have a packet of soft dark brown sugar in front of me now with a best before end panel, and the date Jul 2013?

(It's the only sugar packet I have in at the moment. But I'm pretty sure I remember dates on sugar when I worked in a supermarket)

My honey also has a date, despite that never going off either.

I haven't got any crisps, but I will search diligently to prove you wrong there too.... ;)
