My dad used to tell me that people got in to the habit of doing that because up until the late 50s/early 60s, they would end the evening (not just one film but features and a B film before the main event!) by playing the National Anthem. And anyone not standing proudly or moving towards the aisle was treated with scorn or could be arrested!Yup, remember that too. And everyone used to wait until the end of the credits before leaving. Now as soon as it's ended people are up and out.

I saw Casablanca at the cinema few years ago and there was clapping at the end from the mainly 'older' audience - I thought it was rather nice.
