Converting a VHS tape to MP4?

Just picked up a Samsung DVD VR320 today for £7.50.

It does a nice job of converting VCR to DVD or t'other way round.

Not sure about the MP4 part though.

There are al least 3 shops in my local town centre that do these sort of old to new format conversions. A TV store, a camera shop and a corner shop and none of them are part of a big chain. All 3 are independants.. I bet there's a shop near you that does these conversions too.

Ooooo sounds perfect. Once on DVD I'm pretty sure I can convert it to MP4

I'll have a mooch but was hoping to appeal to a generous CC'er first ;)

Beat me to it
I have a combi vcr/ dvd recorder and it was handy for converting stuff i wanted to keep onto dvd.
Thank you very much for the offer guys, but after talking to my boss today it turned out we actually have a VCR-DVD recorder at work, who knew? Not me

Anyhoo, I've brought it home and copied the video I wanted and also our wedding video as well. Actually that sounds bad doesn't it? I did want to do our wedding video, it wasn't forced on me

The first one is currently being converted to MP4 as well with THIS free software, hopefully it will do the job OK, although I suspect I'll have to leave it running overnight as it's not the quickest process.

Thanks again fellas

I was using Freemake for joining MP4 files, its great as it is easy to use and free. However I have often noticed lip sync issues on the finished project so I'm trying to figure out what else to use. Just worth checking for, you might be fine converting though.

I've deleted it as it was bundled with Trovit malware.
I'll have to install from another source as I still need to convert it.

I found out yesterday that my mad scientist type neighbour "washes" the VCR output from the combo through a modern DVD recorder which upscales the image and then records it to DVD - this gives a lot sharper images (which you may or may not want!).

TBH you could have written that in Albanian and it would make just as much sense to me

I fear I'm rapidly becoming a technophobe

This sounds very interesting. So far I've been using Rescue your Videotapes! to convert from video to DVD via recording first into the computer adn then burning to disk. Have you tried this same approach, and if so is there any quality difference between both? £7.50 is a bargain and a half.

MPEG Streamclip is the best converting software IMO, available on PC and MAC. It allows you to directly convert from DVD to a wide range of formats (MOV, MP4, ProRes for editing etc.), screen resolutions, encoding options etc. Free too!

I haven't tried RYV! but I don't think it has the upscaling features like the Corel WinDVD software.

I've been busy getting BT TV installed for the Eurosport cycling but as it is raing I'll have a go at "washing" an old VHS tape through the Sony to see if I can get an upscaled DVD.
