@RRSODL You are being very coy about the circumstances of the 'theft'. Was the phone physically grabbed from her hand as she used it or surreptitiously slid from her coat pocket or handbag as she made her way through a crowded place? Or, was it taken while left unattended after being conspicuously used and displayed to all and sundry, advertising its presence and whereabouts?
I'm not condoning either method of theft but one is clearly a serious crime while the other is a shame and maybe a valuable lesson to your daughter to be a bit more careful with her valuable possesions (but then again, maybe not because daddy got her a replacement the very next day!)
.....I ordered a new one this morning.

I will repeat again, I'm not saying it is right that her phone was taken in either circumstance but if it was the latter then maybe this is one of life's experiences that you/she will just have to suck up, learn the lesson and move on?

And I bet they charge more than the mobile networks do for it. The standard one for my Company (I left 10 years a go and things may well have changed by now.) was £5/month. They expected due diligence, like not leaving it in a public place unattended. To me that was reasonable. These days many motor policies won't cover vehicle theft where the car is left unattended with the keys in. I feel that's reasonable. No doubt others will differ.
I agree that it is reasonable to take due and attention when in possession of valuables like phones, but I was saying what happened to me personally and what I've been offered in the past.
Mine is a policy attached to one of my bank accounts and I pay a monthly fee, so I can't comment on the price of the premium I'm afraid.

I don't use insurance these days, perhaps due to the fact that for years I paid a little, like £3 a month for insurance and never had a reason to claim. Then Orange changed the policy and they were asking for £8 and my contract was £15 a month so since then I have not bothered.

I have to say that when I do use places that have a reputation for these type of incidents, like the underground in London then all my senses are on alert  I mean, I try to find a corner so my back is protected. I always have my phone in my hand when leaving or bordering the train.

Judging by that, the price of line rental compared to the monthly cost of insurance doesn't quite weigh up somehow, does it?
The London tube is rife with pickpockets and the like; I recently saw a programme covering it aswell.
If you're really vigilant and careful you should be ok.

Had my bike nicked and needed a crime number for the insurers. I desperately tried to get one without a home visit but couldn't, what a farce. They know it's not going to turn up, I know it too, it's not as if I expected them to alert Interpol or anything, I just wanted to deal with the bleedin paperwork. I had one long and very boring home visit, then another, then a follow up call , to ask how the home visits went, then a "satisfaction" questionnaire, after that I'd get security and safety leaflets posted to me for months after. It's mad.

So we need to complain that there is nobody to complain to. Not just give up.
Who are you going to complain to, maybe post to the north pole, see what Santa says.

I would imagine the IPCC, not sure as I have never had to complain about them. But if I ever need to I will.

Do you vote, then how about your MP.

A phone is logged as lost rather than stolen. This from an ex-copper friend who now works for the Police as a civvy. Even when you can track and photograph the thief it is lost property, so not a crime.

All to keep the statistics down of course.
Local force no longer even takes reports, of stolen mobiles, unless violence was used.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion and yours is negative based on your experience so I have no issue there

Personally most coppers I know are dedicated, hardworking and conscientious and i still think this despite suffering several crimes in the past none of which were solved.

Personally I direct my ill will towards the scumbag who committed the crime and not the police who did what they could to assist me

It's great to see a respectful reply when opinions on a matter differ. Thank you.

I also know a few coppers myself, mainly because my kids at some point have played with their kids and so on. I cant say anymore than that cause I don't know. Chats around a football field, for example, never go deep

I don't ignore the responsibility of these scum bag for one minute but in my daughter's case I feel the police could have done more, they had information to follow. In my case, when thieves stole the stereo from my car then the police had nothing to go on and I understood that. Having said that, I can't help it but to think that there would be less of these scum bag if the police worked a bit harder.

You clearly have questions in regard the phone theft investigation that are to date unanswered and leaving a bitter taste re the police in general
Query with the officers concerned the investigation and if it still seems unsatisfactory escalate the complaint to a police supervisor and take your daughter with you
It appears at the moment you only have your daughters account and not the police viewpoint so all may become clear and consolidate your opinion in either direction

Yeah but the thing is, in this and many other instances I'm sure, is that what RRSODL is saying is that the police where given the location where the phone was and still weren't interested.
Why do you have to go and make a report and all that kind of thing, when all that was needed was a swift reaction at the time and the jobs done?
