Hi all,

I've just got myself a bike after 8 years or so and it has 9 speed deore shift gears. I gave it a whirl around town today to get used to it and I can only manage to shift into 18th gear (ie can only shift the right gear over 6 times as opposed to 9 times).

What am I doing wrong? Please can someone explain the basics to changing up and down gears with these (they are completely new to me). They are a 2 way dual release.

Much appreciated, I feel a right dumb @rse!

you may not be able to get it into anything above 6 if you've got the chain on the smallest cog on the front.

failing that, nip back to the bike shop you got it from, could just be badly adjusted.

Is this a 'New' bike?

When you say you can only
shift the right gear over 6 times as opposed to 9 times
do you mean the lever will physically not allow more than 6 shifts. If that is the case it sounds as though the indexing is in need of a tweak and or the cable has stretched. Pop into you LBS.

This may be teaching you to suck eggs but anyway. The bike will be set up in one of two ways (based on the description of your problem) It will either have 2 or 3 cogs on the front (on the pedal crank arms). For each of the cogs on the front the rear gears should move through the nine (9) rear cogs. Thus 18th gear suggest front highest or middle cog and rear highest. My guess is the latter. To get gears 19-27 you will need to left hand shift up. (most gears operate on the principle of the bottom shifter changes up and the finger shifter changes down).

Hope this helps. Please let us know how you get on.
