Currently looking at universities for my eldest son for next year and so far all the universities we've visited will be charging the maximum £9,000 a year tuition fee for all their courses. Now I knew that tuition fees had been abolished in Scotland for Scottish residents, but what I didn't realise was that tuition fees had also been abolished in Scotland for all EU residents with the exception of the English who will still have to pay the full amount. Now this does seem somewhat discriminatory to me especially since English taxes are helping to pay for Scottish universities. Its not the fault of the Scottish system though as it seems there's some quirk of EU legislation which introduces this English discrimination, not to mention the criminality of the UK system which has resulted in English universities tripling their tuition fees from one year to the next.
I think I shall be writing a little letter to my MP to tell him just how cross I am.

Lots of people have been looking at Euro Unis iirc, free on some courses and English language. Might be worth investigation.

Discuss.

Second thoughts - no, please don't. It will change as many minds as trying to suggest to the driver of a grey BMW that his driving skills could be improved.

I've started looking at different opportunities outside England for my youngest - though I'm b******d if I understand why Swedes, Norwegians, or any other taxpayers should subsidise her education and ambition.

Yes, the Netherlands is a particularly good place to look and places like Maastricht are world ranked universities that are free and encourage English students to apply.

I'll be the looking the year after ... and not looking forward to it. As yet I don't even know what the process is and she hasn't worked out what she would like to study (bit like me then at that age!!!).

Here's a radical idea. If she doesn't know what she wants to study, don't go! Get some experience of real life first instead....

Now there's the rub. Unemployment for 18-24 year olds is currently 19%. Real life for many intelligent young people is unemployment and hardly sound preparation for uni.

There's always apprenticeships but many of those are not what they appear to be. Which leaves voluntary work.

As Uncle M says, it's not free and the fees widely expected to go up. Maastricht is indeed world ranked, but never inside the top 100!

University should never be considered "the only way" as many parents have been. All you can end up doing is racking up the costs and delaying the inevitable post grad unemployment. We have a wholly negative outlook on employment that doesnt need a degree.

It's total BS that they can discriminate so blatantly.

The break up of the UK will be driven by things like this. If you live in Scotland you pay the same taxes as someone living in England but what you get for those taxes are different. Note I don't say Scots get a better deal, they get a different deal.

Looking at the troubles in the EU, with a common currency but different governments running their own 'economy' it has proved to be a recipe for disaster and, while we're not there yet ,the UK is heading that way. However with more spending devolved to the countries lucky enough to have their own government within the UK this seems inevitable here too.

Here's a plan. 'Rent' a room on Uncle Morts or Delftse Post's house for a slight fee, all communication carried out through that address, you then become a Dutch resident, no fees. Everyone's a winner.

The trouble is that Uni doesn't seem to be a sound preparation for life either for a lot of them. It's not like graduates are walking into jobs willy nilly.

I know that the current system places value on degrees, often wrongly. How do you change that? (I don't know, I'm asking!)

If you can persuade my son not to go to university in England next year, you can have six months rent for free!

What sort of persuasion does he respond to, a reasoned argument or cricket bat type?

Actually you probably don't need to answer that, I'm sure you'll say neither, if our kids were anything to go by.

Good luck with it anyway.

The hike in fees will hopefully kill off the wishy washy degrees with appalling post graduation employment records as kids won't trade crippling debt for a good time and unemployment.

Schools are not looking after their students' interests when they guide them towards the softer A levels to get higher grades. The only beneficiary is the school which gets a higher value added rating and movement up the league tables.

University isn't for everyone and I was gobsmacked when a Target of 50% of eighteen year olds was set or, rather, plucked out of the air.
