I had to take a garage load of rubbish to the tip at the weekend, as I pull up I spot a gleaming Giant OCR Once Team Replica Road Bike with Aero wheels, all components attached that has been dumped at the municipal tip.

I immediately ask If I can take it, and its a no, I ask the person in charge and its a no. I think I probably asked about 10 times before it got real annoying.

It looked like this (I do have a pic but can't upload)

The Giant OCR Once Team Replica Road Bike and dates back to 2002? and comes in a variety of specs.

It is probably worth £100, may £200.

HOW ANNOYING!!!!!!

No amount of pleading and bargaining was going to work.

What if I call the council?

I guess I need to drop it.

If it has been dumped it belongs to the council.

I know. But it is worth asking. I called them up and under no terms can anyone take items that have been dumped. Fair enough, can't blame me for trying.

They go from the dump here, to a not-for-profit organistaion that teaches mechanical skills, once refurbished they are shipped to Africa. That is what I was told by Bradford council when I wanted a skipped bike.

ahhh.. in the good old days, council dumps were the places where you picked up old bikes. No one minded you taking them then.

Then one day I bet something went wrong and someone got hurt/upset and complained about it, and now we can't have nice things

Pretty sure some Council's syphon some stuff off to the side to sell where possible. Technically they are Household Waste Recycling Centres after all  Perhaps the guys had already reserved that for selling on.

I could just be the bike one of the staff came on.

At our one, the operator "owns" anything dumped once it is dumped. It is then for them to let it go to waste or pass on. Our dump is a production line of men stripping metal out of things and sorting it out. A big lorry full of metal is worth quite a bit I guess.

I chucked a great big plant pot in a skip there, some bloke wanted it and pulled it out but had to pay the bloke a fiver for it. It was in the skip for about ten seconds.

Dyson Vacuums seem to get dumped a lot and then pulled out for the parts.

Maybe. But council waste sites have become much bigger and more mechanised. The last thing they need are kids (&adults) running around jumping in bins to retrieve stuff.

Dumps in the old days (I am talking 30-40 years ago) were just that. Dumps. Anything and everything in the same bin. There was no (or very little) recycling then. They were a playground for us kids.

Most councils these days have an arrangement for bicycle recycling, many of them go to charities in Africa etc where a bicycle is a huge economic benefit. Maybe the recipient of that one will be the future TdF winner!

That's pretty much what I mean! Might not have actually had something go wrong I guess, but yeah, easier to set a 'no one can have anything policy' than try and work out how to do it safely and fairly!

True, it belongs to the council now.
But you just know that it will be sold on by one of the guys who works there. They won't let you take it because they want it, even though it isn't theirs either.
The closest that bike will come to Africa is if an African works at the dump.
