Being a bit pedantic, Western (aka Western Swing) is a bit different, as in artistis like Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, or more modetn like; Asleep At The Wheel

if you want a bit of modent bluegrass, you do lot a worse than finding a copy of the Steve Earle & The Del McCoury band CD 'The Mountain'

He looks very different after a few years though!!

And, back in 1988......

The Dixie Chicks can do Bluegrass rather well too!!

Great selection of tracks.. but the stand out track was Copperhead Road that was superb.
Cheers for that.

Seen Steve Earle a couple of times, & he was fantastic both times

Saw Dixie Chicks at Manchester Apollo in 2004(??) when they were touring to promote the 'Home' CD, it wasn't long after they'd spoken out against George Bush

Heck!!!, I even saw Johnny Cash on his 25th Anniversary tour ('78?) at Sheffield, & still got the programme:becool:

Just as Godwin's Law states that in any political online discussion someone will inevitably draw a parallel with Hitler, I'd like to both instigate and prove the "Mention of Shallow Genetic Pool Inevitability Tendency" for Country music by mentioning and then posting the 'duelling banjos' scene from Deliverance

I'm stil waiting for (The Simpsons) Lurleen Lumpkin's songs to be recorded:

I'm basting a turkey with my tears.
I'm sick of your lying eyes and false teeth.
Don't look up my dress unless you mean it.

It's a brilliant episode:

Lurleen (sings):
In this trailer, I get so cold and lonely,
Lyin' there awake at night, mutterin' "If only
You weren't married so I might
Ask you if you'd bunk with me tonight."
Bunk with me tonight,
Oh, bunk with me tonight.
I'm askin', will you bunk with me tonight?

Homer:
Oh, that's hot. There wouldn't be a man alive who wouldn't be turned on by that.......Well, goodbye.

Anyway, to bring things back on track. Here's my favourite country-influenced album:

Stick close to Emmy-Lou Harris and you won't go too far wrong.

If you like E-L H check out her backing/duet stuff, I personally think it suits her voice better. Here she is with the excellent Ian Tyson singing Summer Wages, think Albert Lee is playing too. If you like this, his LP Cowboyography is a fave of mine and well worth a listen.

Not a bad track that..

I did have a bit of luck, a friend has lent me an album or three which I've now downloaded to I tunes.

Mark Knopfler & E-L H with All the Road Running and..

Dwight Yoakam with the albums... If there was a way and Dwight Live..

Had a quick listen to all three and they dont sound too bad..

Cheers

Back in 2003, I was up in Shetland with my better half, having a drink in The Lounge Bar in Lerwick. The place was pretty packed, but we managed to find some seats; after a short while, two guys came and sat close by us and opened up a conversation. The guy who sat next to my Missus was Steve Earle and the other fella was his manager; we chatted away into the small hours - mostly talking the kinda stuff that people do when they've had a few  .

A local trad. folk band was playing and other musicians seemed to be taking it in turns to join in - all were quality players. We and our new-found companions heartily cheered and applauded all those who played - we had a great night !

It was only towards the end of the evening that we realised who 'Steve' was (and that was only 'cos someone told us ^_^ ) . . . . . . . he'd lost so much weight ! He'd just played a concert at the local leisure centre and had come to The Lounge Bar for a drink afterwards.

Sadly, Steve didn't play with the locals and so, despite sitting just a few feet from him for a few hours in a bar, I've never heard him sing. I have to say, he was a really good company and importantly, wasn't shy about buying a round or two. I only wish that we'd taken some photos and got his autograph, but at that time of night, my thought processes weren't quite as logical  as usual.

Getting some good recommendations here, thanks folks. Have line up the Graham Parker one, Dwight Yoakam, Ricky Skaggs and Steve Earl on Spotify to have a listen over the next few days.

One of my favorite albums is Will the Circle be Unbroken by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, it is a collaboration album with many of the greats of bluegrass and country western. I just found out they remastered it several years ago, so I am going to get that. This triple album is packed with great songs.

One of the people on the album is Doc Watson. Watson was a blind picker/singer from my state, he just died this past May, he is sort of iconic in bluegrass and traditional music circles. Here is a song he did on the Will the Circle be Unbroken album. That is Earl Scruggs beside him in the picture, Earl is on the album too.
