Its actually pretty good

It sounds very much like Bluegrass that you describe initially Boon.

As well as Earl Scruggs above (this piece is used in Warren Beatty/Faye Dunnaway version of Bonnie and Clyde) I love another outfit known as The Scotsville Squirrel Barkers...

...but a very good start is an album officially by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band known as Will The Circle Be Unbroken which includes work by Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs above, Jimmy Martin, Doc Watson - all names to look for - and a whole host of others.

This is another track from that album, like the Scruggs above... but this is a live version by the original artist, a bit bloody older than he was...

As for something more modern, you may like a lot of Americana/Country kind of stuff. Alison Krauss has been mentioned but there's also Gillian Welch, The Sadies, and Emmylou Harris who sang with the legendary Gram Parsons.

Thanks MR..
These links normally lead on to other stuff on utube.. which is very good?

I would say listen to Bob Harris Country on radio 2 Thursdays 7pm. He plays a very wide range of music and steers away from the YeeHaa type of country. Sure that will give you an idea of what is around and what you like or dont like to then follow up on.

I would say don't! You'll hear big hat nobbers like Kenny Cheeseknee but you won't hear fiddle and steel which is what the OP wants. Try Internet radio, US classic country or bluegrass stations.
