Being a bit of a pedant I do get slightly flustered when "county" is compulsory on an order form yet Bristol is not allowed on the pick list. I am then forced to pick the wrong county to place my order since Bristol is a county in it's own right these days

Back to the matter in hand. Allegedly the local sorting office could tell when a visit from a school or youth organisation had happened, as the number of letters addressed "number, postcode" went up by an alarming amount.

Stupid websites that when entering London as a city insist on a county too. So it ends up being London, London. When that happened in New York someone wrote a song about it.

Not many people know Edinburgh's county, not even amongst its residents. Drop down menus often tell us it's Midlothian but it isn't. Other residents will say Lothian but I understand that's wrong too. I believe we are just City of Edinburgh.

I have a continual fight with the DWP about TD12 which is half in Berwickshire, Scotland and half in Northumberland, England. Their computer seems to think it is in England and their staff are too thick or geographically challenged to understand the problem. I see letters addressed to Coldstream, Northumberland, Scotland.

That's not just a Royal Mail thing though. Facebook insists I live in Dumfries and Galloway

Do we still have counties in Scotland?
We have local authority areas, or local council areas, but counties?
Strictly speaking we haven't had counties since 1975, after which we had regions and districts, then in 1996 they changed again to local authority areas.
Some folk still like to refer to their county I guess, in which case Edinburgh would be in Midlothian.
And websites with dropdown menus for counties seem to assume we have counties, presumably because they still have them in England (do they?).

A true Yorkshire man or woman refers to the Ridings, which are well enough known that simply using "West Riding" (for example) after the town or city name is sufficient, although the full title is encouraged especially when writing to those outside the county to shine a little sunshine into their lives.
