I do a lot of posting orders and many people omit their county from the address. In these modern days of postcode technology we don't actually need counties. I even know of some people in Yorkshire who omit the county name from the delivery address.
Do you use a county, does it matter. With unitary authorities, some cities now act as counties and some counties are so amalgamated, i have trouble placing them on the map.
Counties: do they matter. Discuss...

Counties, football teams, nationality, political parties, etc all just fantasies we share.

Delete them all.

A true Yorkshire man or woman refers to the Ridings, which are well enough known that simply using "West Riding" (for example) after the town or city name is sufficient, although the full title is encouraged especially when writing to those outside the county to shine a little sunshine into their lives.

;)

I always used to put 'East Riding of Yorkshire' on letters when writing to my grandmother in Bridlington throughout the thankfully brief 'Humberside' years.

Closer to home, Cambridgeshire has been quietly busy annexing territory for years. Huntingdonshire, Ely and Peterborough for example. If they ever try to take one inch of Norfolk soil there'll be trouble. At least we got Upwell/ Outwell off the buggers.

One of my rather snobby Cambridgeshire neighbours was saying he thought it mad that Newmarket is in Suffiolk. (It is pretty much surrounded by Cambs territory). I suggested that instead of that we should extend Suffolk to include the small town of Cambridge. That went down well.^_^

Put the county on the delivery address by all means, Royal Mail will just ignore it. They use:

House name or number and street
POST TOWN
Post code
Any other information is superfluous. Don't you remember it all kicking off in the broadsheets a few years ago?

A postcode and house number (and nothing else) should be all you need to post a letter. Give it a try.
If I try that to the local central post office, it'll never arrive. It's the wrong postcode out of three for the same street, and they've moved! That last part Royal Mail don't seem to have realised yet.

I'm from Lancashire. Of course counties are important, we need ours to remind Yorkshire people just how close to perfection they got.

Plus I'm one of those that lives in that there London. However my postcode is Dartford which is Kent ergo I live in Kent *

*yes I know my post code has no bearing on where I live and I fully accept I live in London. Kent sounds better though

All this talk of the Post Office being able to deliver on just number/Postcode really boils my wee!

The dozy beggars can only find my house 2 out of 3 goes. This despite all of the details being correct according to their letters sent to me on the subject! As for Porcal Farce...:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Postcodes are not infallible. My postcode often gives an address which is completely wrong. Fortunately I know the people involved and we exchange mail from time to time. Somebody made a mistake when writing the software and while new versions have been corrected our local authority still uses the old stuff. When I was registering a death recently where accuracy is imperative the registrar could not even enter the address manually as the software would not let him. Had to get some sort of fix from head office. Terrible faff and very distressing.

Building control notification gets interesting .

I try and use the locale and then London of City of London as the County.

For example

Newman street
Fitzrovia
London

Or

Bank of England
Bank
City of London

Is it correct . Don't care . It looks right.

Bristol screws me as it's now unitary , but I remember it as Avon , but I know it's Gloucestershire really
