I can't be arsed to go into a huge description of today's incident, but to set the scene it involved a mobile-using courier, a f*** you pull-out, an argument (initiated by him) further down the road, threatening behaviour and a verbal threat of violence (all by him again).

I can cope with the crappy driving and unfortunately I've given up on drivers and mobiles, but his subsequent behaviour was frightening. I'm most surprised that he felt the need to argue - my reaction at the initial incident was a loud "Nooooo!" and a bang on the side of the van as he pulled out on me. Later, as he stepped out of the van, I was a "f***** c***' before I'd even opened my mouth. I'd not done anything else to provoke the incident other than give a filthy look. Not even bad language which, for me, is a rarity.

When I got into work I phoned Fedex and the police. Both were excellent. I spoke to the Fedex depot manager who made it clear that the mobile use alone would get the driver sacked, irrespective of the threatened assault. The driver had given away his callee during our 'discussion' so I could pretty much prove he'd been using it.

The police were more interested in the threats of violence and I was concerned that the driver might come looking for 'afters'.

Anyways. I got a call from the police this evening to tell me that the driver had been sacked and to ask me if I wanted to pursue the threatening behaviour. I'm not going to press the case. Ultimately its his word against mine and there was no actual violence to provide proof, so its unlikely things would get past a caution. The police have given me a contact if he does appear again on my commute to discuss his sudden career break.

I'm not triumphant or glad about this. Ultimately he's responsible for loosing his job, but its not something that I take lightly. I'm also really shocked by how one-sided this all was. I've traded verbals with drivers in the past and usually regretted it, but there was very little that I'd done on this occasion to provoke his behaviour.

I'm having a beer. Let's be careful out there.

Good i'm glad he lost his job. He's supposeed to be a professional driver yet chose to put the general public and his livelyhood at risk.

Thats apart from his dreadful behaviour. god riddance.

Perhaps not triumphant, but you should be glad. If every errant driver felt the force of their actions so instantly, they might take more care.

Thats a good result but I'd be tempted to ask the Police if he will be kept on file for threatening behaviour even if he wasnt charged..?

The guy sounds like a nice peice of work. These are dodgy times to lose a job and no self respecting employer is going to have him high up in the list of applicants I'd imagine.

Thanks all. It's shaken me up a bit.

It is being kept on file because I am concerned that he might be looking for revenge. They may still have a word with him about the phone use and to point out that I could have made his life very miserable if I'd been willing to go for charges.

I've been a critic of the police's attitude to reported incidents in the past, but they were spot on this time. And just to make it clear, Fedex were superb and I don't hold them responsible in any way.

I think their course of action shows how serious they found it and they should be commended for it!

You definitly did the right thing. Good to hear the police were helpful!

Nice one Bollo. As a professional driver myself, I think he got off lightly.

Thank god he got the sack, in my frame of mind just lately i would of hit him if he spoke to me like that.

well done in being calm when he spoke to you.

Calm is relative! He was in my face enough for me to work out he was a heavy smoker. I think he'd crossed the road intendind to give me a slap, but didn't fancy it as much once he got close and realised I'm a hefty lad and wasn't going to drop easily.

got what he deserved, as ttcycle says there is allot of this about at the moment. Whats suprizing is that these people dont use their brains when they are out there representing their employers.
If only bus companies could take leaf from fedexes book

I'm impressed he got fired so quickly, you often get the impression the 'we'll chat to him' is just patter to get you off the case.

Costly mistake by him. Glad you're okay Bollo.
