If you declare it...
Insurance works on the principle of utmost good faith, ie all parties have to declare information at the start of the contract, insurers arent in a position to check every detail of every policy holder when they buy a policy.
But they will check the drivers status in the event of a claim, so if any information has been with held the policy will be void.

Obviously. I'm just saying it happens, a lot of people chance it and hope they don't have an accident, in order to avoid eye-watering insurance.

We had a local shop owner who was fed up of people parking outside his shop.
So one morning he drove his tank to work instead. I believe it was done on an ordinary licence, with a shotgun licence for the gun!
lets ignore the gun for the moment as it was very possibly de-activated in anycase so lets just focus on the tank
if done on a normal car licence it is illegal unless he stuck some painted plywood sheets on his normal 4 wheeled car :P
i am assuming here that his tank was tracked and weighed a fair bit
If you pass a regular car driving test (category B) you’ll get entitlement to drive the following specialist vehicles:

  • agricultural tractors (category F)
  • mowing machines or pedestrian-controlled vehicles (category K)
CategoryDescriptionMinimum age
FAgricultural tractors16/17*
GRoad rollers21**
HTracked vehicles17/21***
KMowing machine or pedestrian-controlled vehicle16

so it appears to drive a tracked vehicle (your shop owners tank) you require a category H licence and when you pass and get your normal car licence (category B) it does not entitle you to category H which requires a further test and thus your shop owner could well have been breaking the law!

sorry, yes i am a law nerd  and now back to the cycling world!

Surely if you buy a tank, then you will duly do your tank driving test (track laying vehicle) so you can legally go on jaunts in it ?
That's what I would do anyway

imagine if she'd hit someone when she was uninsured, had their been a claim the insurance company would scrutinise her personal details and licence type, if they declared the policy null and void that would have made her liable. say she incapacitated a well paid family man, three kids, shed be financially ruined.

at time of incident her insurance wasn't valid
Cheers Ed

I meant if bad injuries were caused, thank God they weren't. So, a grand in costs and fines and six points and the conviction would conservatively double her insurance, as well as paying for the lessons and re-test.

I've actually got her insurance details, and as she has the propensity to lie I am going to call the insurers in the morning to tell them she has been convicted and had her licence revoked.
