Hi Folks,

I'm of up to Coventry for a course and I'm cycling there, is the Ringway a No No ?

My current route has me coming in from Binley on the A428, and I need to get over to near Earlsdon.

I wouldn't advise it. Unless you're local I would even recommend you don't attempt it in a car! A horrible stretch of road, and a lot of blooming up and down too at the various flyovers and intersections.

PS, I got relatives in Binley Woods and I'm up there a lot, so I may see you around

It's great for driving on when you're used to it, a much better ring road system than most cities! Cycling though I agree a definite no-no - cars exit and enter at the same slip road points, and you'll be very very vulnerable there.

However, it's easy to avoid it by simply cycling on the roundabouts under it with out going on to it, which I guess are no more dangerous than any other RAB.

Have a look at this route

Takes you into Earlsdon, the little short section of ring road is on one of the slip roads, a section of slip road I cycled daily when I lived in Earlsdon and worked in Binley, not on the main part of the ring road it self. The bigger roundaboutes are all ok to cycle just take care. The ring road itself can be cycled, I've done it many times, but most of the time there are nicer routes to use, I tend to mainly use the slip roads and roundabouts.

Whats up with the fonts this morning? The font size keeps changing.

Thanks for tip, looks mighty fine, and a lot less turns than I was looking at doing (turns are always bad in a new area, stopping starting, checking your way).

Part of that route is on my commute - the bit past Binley woods to Binley where I turn off to Walsgrave, Its ok, not had too many problems there - the 585 bus drivers can be rather bad though sometimes. I must say its the least favourite part of my commute, but the rest is mostly country lanes so more likely to encounter rabbits than cars at the time I cycle in.

The part through Binley Woods to Hipswell Highway is part of a regular route I use back from the Sunday rides and they have improved it a lot by putting lights on the roundabout where the A46 crosses it. In the 1980's I worked at the old GEC at Stoke, off Uxbridge Ave, and lived in Earlsdon, I used to cross the city twice a day, most of the time between 2001 and 2008 I worked on Herald Way at the top of the Binley Rd and commuted across from Earlsdon. These days I live in Holbrooks and work in Nuneaton so I don't get that way very often, but I did drive a section of that route, the section from Brinklow Rd to the roundabout at the top of New Union St, on my way back from The Ashby Parva Plant Centre, and it hasn't changed much.

I've never heard it called 'The RingWay' - everybody calls it 'The Ring Road'!

I never fancied cycling on it. When cycling from the railway station to visit my family, I always used the subways to go under it (there are cycle lanes through them).

Bits of it are labelled Ringway, I assumed that was the local name for the whole thing ..
