Cracked frame on my SCR

Cleaning the bike and noticed what I hoped was a scratch running horizontally across the seat tube and into the top tube, but LBS took one look at it and announced this was the second SCR they had seen with this and it was definitely a crack.

The giveaway was the crack on the other side that I hadn't seen:angry:. They think I will get a new Defy frame and fork with all my existing knackered drivechain etc swapped over rather than a whole new bike.

As the bike is a Bike2Work scheme one that I am still paying for (final payment in 10 days) I am now trying to contact my HR department to see what the score is. I am wondering if I can get away with demanding a complete new bike under any consumer credit protection, though that might be a bit cheeky

Have you got a spare?

I don't know how many bikes I have lost to some sort of frame fracture.;)

I'll need to give mine a good going over - got mine last April so it's now just been paid off on Bike2Work. Hope there's not a faulty batch out there.

Which SCR do you ride ?

SCR 2, which I think is exactly the same as yours. As I said the crack is in a strange place and runs horizontally from the seat post into the top bar, it is quite thin and the bike needs to be clean to see it

Why is the drive train knackered ? Should last for years I think you will find that the frame is covered under Giant warranty and the drive train under shimano, If you are getting a new frame I would accept it. unless you have really abused the drive train I can't see a problem just swapping it over. you need to read the terms of your warranty.

No spare that is serviceable at the moment, damn me for abandoning my hybrid to rot in the shed.

Edinburgh Bike Co-Op reckon it will be a couple of weeks, what with Giant deciding if it is a warranty issue (it's a cracked frame ffs) and then getting a Defy frame and forks to fit all my kit onto.

The drivetrain isn't knackered as such, but 125 miles a week for a year (blimey that's 6000 miles with 4 weeks holiday), does tend to mean it is fairly worn and could do with a replacement chain and sprocket and possibly chain rings.

That reminds me - it's chain swap time as I've done 570 miles on the current KMC one. Might ditch the old Shimano chain I was going to alternate with for another KMC though - it's been so much smoother.

Gave the SCR2 a good look over last night but no sign of any cracks in the frame (thankfully).

Hope you get yours sorted out quickly and without hassle, Ranger.

Agree with Graham.

Certainly with my 2.5 year old Bianchi, the frame was covered, not the drivetrain (not unnaturally). What you need to watch is ...are there any LBS charges for swapping it all over.My LBS (who i consider quite good) indcated there would be a nominal charge for stripping and rebuilding. How much ? i asked...about £50.

Thanks anyway  i'll do it myself.

Yes strange you should say that i have an scr2 and the frame cracked in exactly the way you described, unfortunately as i bought the bike from E bay and not the original owner there is no warranty, and the Giant after sales manager assured me there is not an inherent problem with these frames, nor was he aware of any problems with a certain batch. I have subsequently replaced the frame with an scr3 version although this is also showing signs of hairline cracks on the weld in a similar area.

I had an SCR 1 and the frame cracked where the seatpost joins the top tube too. Giant replaced it with an SCR A1 which I can't see as available in the UK. It seems to have more carbon involved than the SCR1 though so not complaining.

Be careful with your LBS though. The one I went to in BexleyHell first gave me all kind of lectures about using a racing bike for commuting then charged me around £70 for changing stuff over cos "naturally they had to put new bar tape on" and "a new spacer at the headtube". etc. Got a shorter lecture when I collected it about commuting on a racing bike.

I must say though that the service was Giant was exemplary. The LBS was trying to convince them it was cracked because I hit a pothole. The shop got busy and I was handed the phone with Giant UK on the other end. The guy accepted my version and said the new frame would be at the LBS in two days. It was.
