You need a square taper BB, my son! If that bugger goes you won’t be around to complain.

😱

To be fair I have put a lot of miles on this and my maintenance could definitely be improved!

Unfortunately one legged pedalling wasn’t an option as the drive side started to slide out a little.

You are the first cyclist I’ve seen “chuck a rod” like that. That does look like you got you money out of it however.

You are hereby awarded the Corvette Chucked Rod Award, for chucking above and beyond the call of doo-doo.

this was found, embedded in the parking lot, under a friend’s 350 Corvette.

it wiped the oil pump out of existence on the way out.

I remember seeing a picture of Laurent Figion during the tour sat at the side of the road with pedal, toe clip, crank and half his square taper bottom bracket axle all still attached to his foot.
So they never snapped.🤣🤣🤣🤣

TItanium axles DID snap though....
Edit: sorry , allready mentioned...

Did you tag me to trigger my aversion for Drive-side-/Non-drive side BS or, for that caked-on gunk in the crank section?

I had the idea that you had commented bitd on a similar spindle fail.
Gunk clearly there but tbf the OP shared a good photo and I'm not going to knock the cleanliness of their commuter bike.
Bit disappointed that the chat above degenerates into irrelevant crankset recall and the merits of ST as opposed to 24mm spindle attached to spider options, as opposed to offering anything useful(?) to the OP who asked "I share this and see if others have had any similar experience."
I have seen pictures of such failures but can't remember where (but see below). Won't happen to me: I have enough UN-55s to last me 50000km
I guess the OP might replace their BB and go ST as a result of the advice.
Just to add to the horror pictures, here's my failed Shimano Hollowtech from a month or so ago

What might be useful is to know how old the chain set is and how many miles it’s done. Which might impact on why it’s snapped because as suggested above it doesn’t look in great nick.
