Crankset

Hi there,

Apologies in advance. I've been cycling for quite a while now but am not mechanically minded! I've just been given a carbon frame and am trying to source a crankset for it. All I've been told is that is a standard British thread but I'm unsure as to whether I need external bearings, square tapered bb etc. I've never understood all of that stuff...Do all frames require a bespoke bottom bracket or are most standard while there are exceptions e.g. BB30? Also do some frames only accept external bearings and others square tapered/press fit.

I've seen this and to me I think it would be ok...what else do I need to buy and would it fit? I'm guessing a Tiagra/105 BB??? I'm so out of my depth!!!

All help welcome and thank you in advance...

All you need is a standard English thread BB the design is up to you but personally I would go for Shimano HT II that way you have the choice of Tiagra up to Dura Ace chainsets to put in, if its a threaded BB shell then forget any press fit bearings, they wont fit.

This will be ideal

If it is standard British thread it will take a screw in cartridge such as a Shimano UN55. What you have linked to would work with an external bearing - your frame may be ok to take an external bearing - but the frame probably would need "facing" to ensure the bearings are exactly parallel - and that's a job for a good bike shop. BBB30 and variants are push fit so don't go into a threaded bottom bracket cup.
