crashed and burned tonight

Just thought I would share my eventful commute home.

half a mile from home and going down a hill doing 23mph according to the comp touch the brakes go to turn left and the bike literally goes beneath me I go sliding in the road on my side a good 5 meters and the bike slid into a car.

I got straight up and retrieved my bike new light bracket smashed saddle bag saddle clamp broke and front wheel buckled. My shorts were literally hanging off me and the tights and gloves were badly ripped also.

All in all a pretty expensive commute home im gutted to be honest cant understand what happened. Ive trued my wheel and had a quick look is there anything specific I should be checking for damage ??.

Im ok pretty cut up my head hit the deck and the helmet took the force of that but my face got cut somehow bit sore but more worried about the bike and the damage.

any advice much appreciated.

ouch sorry to hear that. Wasn't yer new bike was it? Did you hit the ground with a pedal per chance? Could also be some diesel/oil in the road. Got caught out by that couple of months back, just managed to hold it but ruined a pair of overshoes.

I actually pick the new bike up tomorrow and at this rate it will be called into action sooner rather than later !.

I think you may be right Ian it could have been oil or something, It was dark and I couldnt really see, Ill ride it tomorrow and see how it goes any trouble ill book it in for a service I think.

Anyone know if niterider sells spare light brackets, ill have a google I suppose.

There is a lot of ice about. I was out cycling yesterday and found myself on a sheet of it across a lane, literally from verge to verge. I spotted it too late to brake, so I coasted over it without steering and thankfully stayed upright. A minute later down the road I came across two road bikers pelting towards me, I did shout and warn them but they didn't appear to slow down . . . . not sure how their 23mm slicks would cope compared with my relatively soft, fat 37mm touring tyres on my LHT.

Ouch BB, Just read this - sounds painful. Hope you are ok- might be worth taking the bike in for a quick check up of the frame etc -should be ok though unless you went down quite hard. I suppose diesel could be to blame unless the wheel locked out on braking?

Bends are just one of the common places for diesel to be deposited on the road. Lorries fill up with the stuff and and as they go round a bend it can slop out of the tank. The same has happened to me several times but so far always managed to bang down my foot and then ridden the storm.

Impossible to see the stuff in the dark but if it's recent you can often smell it.

Back in the 80's there was a campaign by the BMF to highlight the issue - it didn't work.

Not nice...

Up here it was fine when I set out from home yesterday - but surprisingly icy in town. I wasn't expecting that given the recent uplift in temperatures.

Not being critical - we all ride to our ability - but I'd find approaching a turn at 23mph quite fast given the recent road conditions. Take it easy on that new bike!

Bad boy, I'm so sorry to hear this. How are you feeling today, now the adrenaline has calmed down? Probably quite sore I'd imagine. Are you able to go back to the area and check to see what could have caused it, even if it's just to regain some confidence in your bike.

Nasty. There is a horrible mix of diesel, dirt and salty mush on the roads at the moment.

Jeez, sounds really nasty. Thanks goodness you didn't end up under a car or something. Good luck with your facial healing. If it's any consolation I fell on straight onto my face last Tuesday and I'm pretty much healed up now.

Owch - I took my little boy to nursery this am and it was really icy.

I was in the car and was glad I wasn't on two wheels.

Hoping that this bout of weather sorts itself out and I can get back riding daily again.

I was out on Sunday just after servicing the bikes. Took one for a quick 20 minute test ride and nearly slid off twice. One was ice the second was definitely diesel on a roundabout - the backend slid and I have no idea how i kept going without coming off. Neither incident was at speed thankfully.

I do think Beanz is right I was going to fast round that corner and obviously went over something which resulted in me hitting the deck hard.

I did cycle in today but was a little low on confidence and my leg was killing me with every pedal revolution, but wanted to get back out straight away. I trued my wheel last night and checked once at work and it had gone a little again so I need to look at that later.

Why dont anyone sell spare Nite Rider Ultrafazer mounts cant find one in stock anywhere !!.
