Was out with the family this PM and popped into the chemist to stock up on cold medicine, one of the big chains.

Both me and mrs Jeltz have a cold but they wouldn't let us buy a day and a night remedy each, not even in separate transactions! Apparently they limit purchases per household...... So too bad if there are multiple ill people in one household.......

Crazy, but they said its the law.... Yes, I know its to make suicide more difficult, so I guess the next thing will be that you can't buy rope with a breaking load of more than 30kg

Anyway went to another Chemist!

My mum has this problem trying to buy sufficient stocks of medication (not sure why she needs to) and she gets around it by going back each day or going to several chemists while she is out shopping.

I think if health and life saving was the issue then it would make more sense to limit alcohol and tobacco sales.

I was buying some rather good quality cider in Sainsburys a few months back with my sister. I'm 21 and she is 17. And they wouldn't let me purchase the cider. even after speaking to the store manager and me clearly pointing out that not only am i above the legal age and i had ID to prove it. but i could also just pop out and then back in and buy it at a different till and you would be none the wiser. I also pointed out that if the mother behind me was purchasing alcohol with her 3 y/o then i would expect them not to serve her. they had nothing to say to that and i felt it was rather pointless to write to sainsburys head office discussing my displeasure with the stores policy. they tried to fob me of with some legal shoot, which if is true is B/S

On a similar note I was at Asda yesterday getting some alcohol. I went through the self serve checkouts and the red light went on when the alcohol was scanned. I needed to be checked to make sure I was an adult.

Oddly enough I wasn't the only one buying alcohol. All the 10 self serve checkouts were attended by one staff on her own. She was run ragged scanning her tag on the checkouts to authorise the alcohol sales that I don't think she could have had any chance of checking if a customer was an adult or not. She didn't even look at me, an arm just reached through and cleared my till display before she rushed off to another till.
There were adults, younger people, children and babies all crowding around the check outs.

Blimey, it's a good thing I never shop in supermarkets (I leave that to mrs ianrauk). Can't remember last time I was in one and certainly have never seen these self service tills youa re talking about.

It's Paracetamol which is the problem. Commonly used for overdose, even a small amount will produce liver damage and if taken in sufficient quantities and not caught quickly will eventually kill you. So even a cry for help can go badly wrong. Most people don't realise the consequences of OD'ing on such a common drug.

When I buy a sunday paper - S Times or Observer at the ASDA self-serve till, it stops and requires me to get shop assistant approval as it may contain adult material unsuitable for a minor and they have to key in their approval!!!!
