Creaking, grinding pedals

I have some Shimano SPD m540 pedals.

Tney intermittently creak and I can feel them sort of grinding.

I’ve took the axle out and regressed them. there didn’t seem excessive play in them.

I’m assuming either the dish or bearings must be pitted. Is there anything else I can do or are they scrap?

Have you tried swapping them out for a pair of cheap plastic ones? It might not be the pedals.

Can be the cleats/pedal interface. WD40 the mechanism.

Also, check the crank threads. Take out pedal, clean and re-grease. Muck can and does get it and can cause noises.
