Is it the seat, or is it the seat post beneath the clamp band?

Really hard to tell. All I know is when I sit on the seat there is a craking noise

If it was the seat post joint. What should I do?

Worth squirting lube in where the saddle rails meet the base of the saddle shell...

I'd also grease the saddle clamp.

If the above remedy doesn't work, take the seat and pin out.

Smear a little Instant Gasket inside the seat tube below the clamp - NOT at the clamp.

This stuff works wonders for silencing metal/metal creaks.

Used Vaseline instead but it works! Creaking gone.

Thanks folks.

Because something happens (duh ) that means that it's never safe to use / may not stay in place / be reliable, ever. Apparently.

Hmm. Not sure if vaseline counts as grease but went for a 40km ride with some serious (at least for me ) hills and descents + some bumping along on rough roads.

Have I been dicing with the grim reaper all day ?
