Must admit I'm sceptical that it's sunlight: looks rather more like feature lighting, zooming in... still, it's certainly a very curious effect!
Here is the evidence I have, zooming in on my original images. The second is from the picture posted above; the first was taken just under 2 minutes earlier. EXIF data shows the camera settings to be identical:

And here's what the western skyline looked like at the same time:

The illuminated building is due south from my vantage point, which means that the angle between myself, the building and the sun will have been greater than 90°, and anything else lit up by the same shaft of light must be well out of shot on the left.

Had I realised how unlikely this would look after the event I would have gathered more evidence!

(Edited to put the first two images side-by-side)

Ha, thanks. It certainly is a weird effect, whatever caused it!!

I had a hour to kill today, so I walked along the industrial Thames Estuary.
Is there beauty in the ugly?
Probably a bit like a grade D GCSE photography course work.

Ha, that's properly creative. I like the first one in particular. But maybe just as well that I'm not a GCSE photography assessor.

When a new lens gets delivered between sunset and going out for dinner. 😢
40mm f1.2 manual @ f1.4. B&W seemed appropriate.

Oh, and this turned out quite well. If you're navigating a boat into Topsham beware of the massive rocks on the approach, as it's a bit like St Malo... well, this shoreline puddle is.
