Mobile contract = yes. Does this make a difference?

Are you saying it's because I applied for a zero % card that's the issue?

Yep, the 0% rate cards will be scored more heavily, try a medium rate card.

Just be careful, if you have multiple applications in a short time that will go against you (it looks like you're desperate for credit).

Try MBNA.

I'm intrigued - how do you pay for things? Debit card?

Debit card or BACS.

Do you get the same level of protection with debit cards? Not really looked into it tbh.

No, debit card is the same as BACS I beleive.

I asked this when buying our car with my current account Visa Debit (rang the bank to make sure they didn't decline it).

(Edited to add BACS).

Anyone ever been in this position?

Just applied for a zero % credit card to book something that we wanted the security of having paid for by credit card. But sadly, we were declined.

We own a substantial house with no mortgage. A lot of money saved - including a lot in the bank to whom we applied.

Even in our 'later' years we have a pretty high (and stable) income. We still manage to save a lot of money each year.

We do not owe a single penny to anybody or any institution.

No CCJ's ever, no bad debts ever, no history of bad payment ever.

Both score 'excellent 999' on Experian.

And yet we can't get a piddling credit card.
You have to use credit regularly to get credit card deals like this. It sounds backwards, but that's how it is.

Being in your position can be just as bad when applying for credit cards and loans. They probably don't have enough history from you if you've no recent financial products and also you may not be their demographic that will enable them to balance the risk of defaulting against being a profitable customer.

We've been in the fortunate position of never having any form of debt for over 20 years, use credit cards all the time but pay off in full.

Had a whole sea of troubles getting my first mobile phone contract as I had no credit history to give!

Looks like my years of financial prudence have bitten me on the bum then.... next life I'll be more reckless.
Wierd, but true.

Not a new problem...

I remember being told by my bank to "buy something on HP" to generate a credit score that would enable the card application and that was back in 1976

This is the problem.
For years I did not use any of my credit cards, switched all my transactions.
Then got refused by a new internet provider.
You need to have a history of credit to get credit.
Now I make sure I use my credit cards, paying off the balance in full by DD, voila', no more refusals.
