Hi Lanzecki, thanks for your detailed replies. I shall abandon the idea of the AA rechargeables.

But water can be used, apparently, because "Li-ion contains no lithium metal and does not react with water"

Re: AA cells, the non rechargeable alkaline cell has a higher internal resistance than rechargeable AA Ni-Mh cells which is why the rechargeable cell can deliver more power instantaneously than Alkaline cells. The performance for low current applications over a long time may favour Alkaline cells however.
