Yorkshire have to include Root and Brook today so they get their 1 match of practice in, which will be interesting in what is already quite a decent middle order. Lets hope they don't fluff their lines! one of Wharton or Malan to miss out along with Revis (who was playing for the 2s earlier in the week). actually Finn Bean the opening also played in the 2s roses came so maybe one of Malan & JW pushed up to open, find out soon...

..ooh interesting, Dom Bess pushed up the order to open. Well he did get a ton as nightwatchman the other week..
Malan rested, bowling choice of 5 seamers plus Bess.

Bowlers in control at Headingly, Root out for 1 😭

The ball is swinging all over the place, poor toss to lose....

So James Rew deservedly called up to replace the injured Jordan Cox. Cox was likely to be the "reserve batsman" as Jamie Smith is the nominated wkt, and Ollie Pope was wkt in the last test because Smith missed that tour (NZ) for family reasons and Cox who was in line to keep wicket then got injured.

However Rew is a better keeper than Smith, and Pope for that matter , neither of whom keep wkt for their county sides in red ball cricket but is presumably in the squad as the b reserve batter,,,

Interesting...

Rew is an exciting prospect, done very well at County level & England age groups.

Are India v Pakistan playing this season? Could be an interesting match?

Given current events I think it's highly unlikely they'll be organising any kind of series.

The last Test series was nearly 20 years ago and I'm pretty sure they've only met in World Cups/The Champions trophy since then.

Correct, only ever play each other now in ICC tournaments.

The recent champions trophy nominally held in Pakistan they scheduled all of India games (incl vs Pakistan) in Dubai. In 2023 ODI world cup held in India, Pakistan agreed to play, although very few of their supporters were able to get visas & tickets.

Last minute decision to travel up to Taunton to watch Somerset v Sussex. Unexpectedly bumped into old cricket colleagues & enjoyed a very long lunch as well as the cricket .

Jamie Smith to open. Given he struggled at 3 in the 50 over CT, I wonder why its thought he'll be a success opening? I hope I'm wrong.

The other options would be to have him keep wicket and bat lower down, and get Jos Buttler at the top of the order, where he can be devastating* EDIT - checking this he only opened in T20, not 50 over format (but doesn't combine opening and wkt keeping too well) or have Will Jacks open and bat Smith at 6 or 7.

I hope Bethell does well, seems to have a lot of talent and adds variety to the bowling too. We were always a bowler short at the CT.
