The Cromarty - Nigg ferry service has started running again: a summer service in 2016 from 1 June to 30 September. Some details here.....

If a Google search tells you the service is not running, this is now not the case - for the summer.
Reposting this detail which @snorri posted elsewhere as this is an attractive route to avoid much of the A9 on an end-to-end.
