Yup, i see. Thanks. That makes sense.

Because both the words given had the right number of letters, I assumed they were the answers. but their homonyms also have the same number of letters, and they are the actual answers.

Which means OARS must be the answer to the other one. I hate cryptics.

@jefmcg Bad cryptic clues are irritating and without meaning. But a good cryptic crossword by, for example Araucaria (RIP) of The Guardian newspaper, is very satisfying. It can be a wonderful experience solving a crossword together with someone. Both struggling and feeding off one another's ideas.
