Explanation of my first clue which no-one seemed to get (please do correct me if it was a bad clue!):
Anagram of berserk and vale (a version of Mad and Valley)
My difficulty with it was that trigger words like ''a version of'' send you looking for an anagram of the text in front of you, not for anagrams of 2 synonyms which are not given in the text. I don't think that there are fully formalised rules for clues but your clue was a step too far for me and, apparently, @winjim

I think the phrase "a version of" could refer to an anagram or a synonym but not both at once. Perhaps another indicator to show that two operations are required?

Even if you understood what was required, it would be pretty hard. You need all the synonyms of mad, combined with all the synonyms of Valley then find anagrams of each combination? I just tried an online thesaurus and it had about 20 synonyms for Valley and 40 or so for mad, so that's 800 combinations - oh and berserk wasn't on the list. If "berserk vale" was a common phrase, then it could work.

True, but if you already suspected the answer from the other half of the clue, then you could at least work backwards to confirm it.
I also was a bit confused because I consider brake levers to be operated by a pull, rather than a press, but that's a minor point and "pressed" reads better with the rest of the clue.

The original clue contained 'Pressed to stop showing version of Mad Valley' contains 'showing' which I thought was an indicator of sorts but maybe not enough even if coupled with 'version'. I take your point and all the points made above! Will try harder! ^_^

If I was clueing this using an anagram I would go with something like:

Pull these to stop several kerbs being broken (5,6)

I've been a bit cheeky and missed out the apostrophe in kerbs but it can be read as:
Pull these to stop. 'Several kerb' is being broken.

If you follow the strict rules as laid out by Ximenes, then that would be a 'clue within a clue' and deemed not square dealing. It's an ingenious clue, but perhaps a little too hard to crack for us mortals.

Just to add: What you are asking for is for solvers to work out an anagram from synonyms of the words in the clue. Many synonyms for each word, and you can't anagram all the combinations which might run into thousands. I would suggest that that is almost impossible unless you got very lucky with crossing letters. Synonyms or anagrams on their own are fair, such as:

Answer is imaginary cyclist called Crazy Glen - clue: 'version of Mad Valley' = fair (synonyms)

Pull these to stop berserk vale being confused = fair (anagram)

Horrible clues, I know, but I hope they clarify what are generally accepted fair play rules

I think so! Thank you.
