Actually, his residence, Sayes Court, was only about half a mile from here, so it's a bit of local knowledge. But, while nowhere near as well known as Pepys, he's not a complete unknown. I was a bit worried that her 1 hr track time world record was only hinted at in the clue but I reasoned that as soon as someone hit upon Evelyn in their list of diarists they'd be half way there.

Right answer wrong anagram. SRN is nurse (State Registered Nurse). E as you spotted is a 'bearing'. French bread is 'pain'. Storm is the anagram indicator.
But I think its over to you for the next clue!

Yeah, I knew my working was wrong, but I had enough letters to be sure my answer was right.

I'll work on a clue tomorrow, and see if I can come up with one that doesn't make anyone want to punch me. Someone else can step into the breach in the meantime.
