LCC over CTC anytime they are a much better organisation and they don't continually mess up members' renewals leaving them without cover as the CTC do. Glad I left them. And I don't even live in London anymore not for a few years now.

I just signed up for ETC as it cost the same as LCC but provided third party cover and break down pick up free of charge as well.

We should have a sticky thread on this, the question comes up often enough. CTC or LCC, pick whichever you prefer. My impression is that CTC are for cyclists who wish to use the roads, and LCC is for cyclists who want "facilities" - but that could as easily be based on the spin from each group as on fact.

The CTC magazine is far more interesting. The LCC have discounts in bike shops, if you're the kind of cyclist who likes to support their LBS

I'm looking to join one of the above bodies in order to get insurance cover. This will be for me and hte MRs - Does anyone have any recommendations?

I requote the original post. Lizban wants insurance cover as his reason for joining. Having formerly, been a member of CTC, I am glad I moved my allegiance and membership over to BC.

I fundamentally disagree with CTCs flagship campaign of "safety in numbers". How many of their members tour in huge packs of cyclists? I guess most of them are male 55-75 years old and solo cyclists. Their emphasis should be on vastly improving cycling facilities, enforcement and strengthening of current road traffic law with respect to careless and dangerous drivers who injure or kill cyclists. I would not join them again. As for their supposed touring perspective CrazyGuyOnAbike is a far better source of material. And as I've already said their membership renewal system is hopeless. CTC services were only available by calling expensive 0870 or 0844 numbers. LCC is far better. I have no experience of BC but would try them in preference to CTC. Plus I have local bike club membership.

*I should declare that I am a member of both LCC and CTC, and I'm a CTC National Councillor.

then perhaps you can get my forum access reinstated .
I was banned for life arbitrarily by a Mod (Simon Si )who disliked critism. (I was sticking up for another member who he was persecuting ) I am not even permitted to view the forum as they have banned my ISP address.

I would very much like to apply for membership to CTC but there is little point if I am banned from their forum.

The CTC forum is a very much more genteel affair than this one. That's the way we want it. Getting banned is nothing special.

Only presumably for those that are arbitrarily banned, without warning, by an over zealous biggoted Mod that abuses his little bit of power to eliminate anyone that doesn't aggree with his narrow minded opinions;)

I'm not bitter rite !

BC, over such things as the Sky Rides, have shown that they are not interested in working with other organisations, even where it is in their members' interests.

And CTC are? Not from where I'm sitting.

I am no longer a member of any cycling organisation apart from the V-CC for their publications.

Funny - my experience is quite different. I know that CTC works closely with quite a few other cycling organisations, such as LCC and ECF.

Yes the CTC tried a hostile take over of the LCC a few years ago. Thankfully members of the LCC voted against it .
