so you can get a fine and points for using a mobile whist driving, but car manufacturers make most models with cup holders,i presume it's illegal to drive whilst sipping a boiling hot cup of coffee?? if so why do we have them in our cars?

They're the places where we put parking receipts, loose change, sweets and the cable that fits an ipod thing we haven't got anymore...

You can get done for using a mobile phone, yet having a fire at the end of a piece of paper & tobacco is fine.

A car's no good (too small): you need a bus - a double-decker! ;)

They are mostly for the US market where roads are all straight and the car is seen as a nice refuge away from the stresses of family life, work etc. in which to catch up on some texting, read the paper, drink coffee and eat donuts and chat with pals.

This is the main reason why my brother in Michigan refuses to cycle on the highways.

i remember visiting the US and going to car showrooms with an American friend, one of the main things she was interested in was "what are the cup holders like"

I'm not saying that any distraction while driving is a good thing. But actually, with mobile phones, the principal reason they are dangerous is the distraction of concentrating on a conversation with someone who is not in the car with you, rather than the physical distraction of holding it (which is why hands-free phoning is, depending on the research you read, either as dangerous or nearly as dangerous as hand-held). So I would expect drinking a drink to be significantly less dangerous than using a phone in terms of distraction. Though that leaves the issue that, once an emergency has developed and once you've reacted to it, you'd probably just drop your phone but you might be less inclined to drop a cup of boiling liquid....

It's for when you're having a picnic in your car in a layby, innit?
If you put your cup on the dash board it slides off and you get scalds where the sun don't shine.
