I had a race prep coaching session today and the BC coach said that doing club runs in a race season would slow me down.
I know about fast/slow twitching muscles etc but i didnt think that putting in miles would low you down, if anything it would improve general fitness.

He's right (or she). Riding steady distance is not particularly helpful for racing short circuits - especially during the racing season (when you should be racing anyway). Short circuits and crits are about speed, not distance.

I still do all my club runs, social rides etc... Above all I have to enjoy my cycling and my coach has to work my training around this.
Racing is just part of that enjoyment and im not willing to give up any part of it.
