I was in a cave some years ago - flat out crawl - almost a squeeze - and a bat came fluttering directly towards me. he swerved up a few inches and flew over me - couldn't have been more than 2 or 3 inches of clearance

We get them around here, I think they roost under the bridge. They fly around our house, they do a circuit around and swoop very low

they are protected here. i bought my dad a bat box off the RSPB website. you're not allowed in there to clean it out, you have to get a bat expert to do it or something.

I admit to a certain bias against bats. The merest suggestion that one is seen flying around a building/ site sets in train the most unworkable, restrictive procedures devised by Natural England, apart from those devised to prevent any disruption whatsoever to the busy lives of great crested newts. No problem with bats roosting in trees and natural habitat but would you want bats scrabbling about in your loft space? - they're as bad as pigeons.
