Bolt croppers make short work of cutting stays.

Plax is as hard as titanium nails. She'll just chew them off, I reckon.

LOL, I think Bonj is right, I'd have to get a bloke to do it - I have enough of a job cutting the housing for gear and brake cables with proper cable cutters! I knew Mr Plax would be useful for something......

I can't fathom why people would try and cut a mudguard stay whilst it is still attached to the bike...

Have you read some of the histrionics people have trying to fit guards just the once? Why on earth do it twice?

I'm surprised anyone fits mudgaurds anyway.
Does it rain much in your part of the world, Plax?

Of course not, it never rains here. I didn't have to put my waterproofs on halfway through todays CTC ride at all .

I've given up trying to cut them myself now. I'll have to mark them up the size I want and take them to my dads for him to fix. He has all sorts of tools and is naturally much stronger than me!

I've got the same issue - tried metal snips, hacksaw, pliers!
Are they TorTec guards by any chance?

I use my wife's bolt croppers.

Yep, my wife has bolt croppers. She's an upholster and uses them to cut springs. In fact, she has quite a few tools in her workshop that make me envious!

I have to say I found it to be the most tedious job yet on the bike  After junior hacksawing my first pair, I shelled out on a decent set of boltcroppers just to take the pain out of it.

tortec guards are pretty much the same as SKS, they take the same stays anyway. I've got tortec guards and i needed some new stays to refit them back on my scott so i got some SKS stays and they fit fine.

Nope, SKS. You think they'd make it a lot easier wouldn't you!

Junior hacksaw then file is best. If you don't have quick-release ends at the forks then filing the ends smooth is important: Don't over-tighten the eye-bolts and in a mudguard jam situation the mudguard will slide off the stays.

Or fit little rubber end caps that usually come with the mudguard stays.

do that as well, but I think he means file them smooth so that in the event of a jam they will slide off the fasteners easily, whereas if there is burring on the cut end they may not.
