Cx bike for commuting (and sportive rides eventually)

im highly surprised at my road bike to be honest, it goes out in all weathers, has me belting down hills and over potholes, gravel cycle tracks allsorts hitting off curbs ect and is still great!

I just don't trust myself on a road bike, I think the CX would be the more sensible, as it can take the battering without being so fragile.
There are times I hit a pothole and hope that the bike will keep going, and then imagine the repair bill.

So far, I've got 5 4 bikes in mind, Merida Cyclocross 3 or 4, Whyte Dorset, Genesis Croix De Fer or the Equilibrium. Probably more to add by the time I come to buying mine.

Edit: 4 bikes, as noticed the Equilibrium doesn't come with disc brakes.

That saddle is extremely low is the frame the right size for you lol?
Fuji do some nice cx bikes!

I've seen a few nice bikes while on the road, but I'll wait for some money to come in, shove it into savings and keep it aside until I've gotten down to 100kg (or nearly there haha).

My Cross bike (which I use on the road) has a 46/36 chainset, the road bike has a 50/34 both with 12-30 at the back, I have no problem changing between the 2 of them. unless you want to push on down hill, 46 is fine, uphill the 36 needs a bit more effort than 34 but is manageable.

I own a Genesis Vapour Disc, use it mainly for my commute with rack and panniers, and it's great on roads and on trails.

Keep at it, a new bike is a powerful motivator. I got my cross after dropping 15 kgs. Which I use on weekend and fast rides. For the commute,I still use the 17 kg flat bar hybrid to continue dropping the weight.

I've only had my current bike since 20th Feb, so won't be changing anytime soon, but need to drop the 50kg then I'll order something. Of course going through reviews and reading more and more advice about the bikes etc.

@sazzaa My intentions are to have the commuter setup with rack and panniers, but will probably become my overall bike, considering the riding I do is all road based I don't really need the MTB.
How do you find the Genesis? They're being highly recommended by my LBS.

That's not a problem, it's great to hear good things about them, when I've been drooling over this year's catalogue haha.
I'd never heard of them until I was looking at the Merida last year.

I think I saw one of these in Halfords yesterday, looked amazing in the flesh. Does yours have the extra set of brake levers on the middle of the handlebars?

There is a 'fad' for having a CX bike for the commute. It's generally down to the disc brakes folk are going for these.

Either a road bike or a CX will do, personally I have a road bike (3), and an MTB for off road. If you've got a mix or surfaces then a CX bike is quite good. If it's 100% tarmac, then get a road bike.

My CX with discs is perfect for road only all year round commuting as it has room for larger tyres with full mudguards and a pannier rack for panniers.
It's not as fast as the road bike but it's not far off.
