I stopped to chat with an angler on the drain near Pondersbridge while out on a ride recently.

He was telling me that tench to 8lb are taken from the drains on a semi-regular basis!

The biggest problem I can see is locating the fish, as there are zero features on most of them. He seemed to think that a lengthy, concentrated pre-baiting regime is what's required.

Pondersbridge spent many an hour there I have relatives from. Ramsey Mereside and as a kid on family visit me and my cousin's spent hours on the forty foot etc mainly messing about and abit of fishing

I knew somebody wouldn't be able to resist. What's it like to be perfect?

Graham

Argue the point why don't you.

Never ever saw a sniff of a tench, but at the time I was a student so throwing loads of bait in wasn't really an option... Roach, perch (especially in the drains), bream and eels was pretty well much it. There's a reasonable carp lake here nere Oxlode though...

I used to like to fish for mackerel off the rocks with a spinner. My uncle first took me to do this when I was about 10 and I used to go with him regularly until he wasn't really able to walk to our favourite spot any more. I did carry on myself for a while but this thread has reminded me I haven't done so in a good few years. I stopped really as I got more into cycling and preferred to do that on a Sunday instead.

I must look out my gear and have a go again this year. Conveniently my favourite fishing spot is located quite close to my favourite hostel

Its been a long time since ive fished but im looking to get back into it this year. Started off going after the usual course fish fishing at the river lea when i was 12 then graduated to pike fishing a good few years after. I havent fished for pike in years but im more for carp fishing which i havent done much of over the last 10 years. Personal best so far is 3oz perch, 23lb pike from the lea and 18lb carp from the reservoir in Tottenham hale. Im looking to start spinning for pike down the lea come this summer. I'll get the hybrid out and slowly ride my way up the river stopping here and there to try my luck

Are those the reservoirs down on Ferry Lane? Good place to go birdwatching too - have seen Egrets in one of the streams down there.

The carp was! I have also seen a lot of big pike there too but i havent fished for them in aaaaaages. The river or stream around the back used to have some pike and carp in there too. I think i stalked a 15lb carp on a match rod there. What a fight it was!

Wow! I've seen people fishing in there times I've walked past while taking a brisk stroll from Walthamstow to Seven Sisters, but never realised the fish in there were that big... Sounds like a pretty decent fishery.

The main reservoirs have carp upto the 60s and 70s (lb) last time i checked, there are pictures in the car park near the entrance of people pulling out even 80lb carps i think. It is a hard place to fish. Me and my dad used to go there for months on end and be lucky if we'd catch anything at all part of the problem was we lacked the gear to fish at great distances which comes in very helpful. Almost a must many regulars would say. We had all the regular shimano baitrunner setups but none of these 'big pit' reels that had become very popular and would allow you to lob your bait to the moon. Needless to say we went back to fishing in a private fishery we were members of up in essex.

Just a heads up just incase you decide to go there!

Carp was smaller and easier to catch but there would be a lot more of them and a few 20s and 30s floating around in there.

 Those are monsters...

Not really my thing though, prefer just pootling about on the river bank with a fairly basic set-up.

Well at least there's somewhere to stay. Now if only there was somewhere to get a drink, too ^_^

you should ride up to the weir (or Kings weir i think they call it) and see if you can catch some pike with me when i get all kitted up

I rarely go out that way these days, just happen to know the area as I had a uni friend who used to live there until he decamped to Canada. 'Preciate the offer though :okay:
