Thanks @Bobby Mhor I know I'm a bad angler. I tie flies for my friend Bob and he says they never fail. He's always sending me photos of some leviathan escapee rainbow he has caught from his local river. Or a lovely brown in the act of being released.

Even the bloke up the road who is a complete beginner. He tied on a Clan Chief I had only given him for a laugh. Six good trout that caught. I had to buy some more small red hackles. At the moment I'm tying Bob some March Browns and Hawthorn flies.
It's luck sometimes but if I'm trying some new water, I try and visit it first and just watch what's happening but I know what flies may always do the trick. On rivers, damsels, black peacock spider (excellent dropper fly), hares ear, pheasant tail nymph. If I'm fishing dry? bob's bits in smaller sizes ginked up. The small river I fish is not deep so I just use the weight of the point fly but in flowing water a couple of turns of lead wire maximum. It's a game of matching fly and keeping your head down. One stretch I fish is upstream of this bridge. Keep in there!!!!

Long time angler here, fished for over 50 years

Sea, game and now taking it easy doing a bit of coarse fishing until the trout season starts.

For most of the last 35 years I've mainly fly-fished, including fishing for, and managing the England Loch Style Team during the noughties.

Back in the 1970s as a teenager I used to coarse fish for tench in the Ashton Keynes area of the Cotswold Water Park.

I've had an almost total break from fishing for the last couple of years apart from a few grayling days on the Welsh Dee, as most of my spare time has been consumed by cycling.

I did pick up a split cane Richard Walker Mk.IV Avon on eBay a few weeks ago as I quite fancy doing a little laid-back tench fishing this summer. I have a collection of early Mitchell reels and so will probably go quite retro. Quill float, lift method etc.

The idea of sitting back in a comfy chair with coffee and cigar watching a float quite appeals to me as I get older.

I'm still planning a four week fly fishing trip to Montana next year though.

I've had grayling from the Dee and many from the Severn. I also like my retro gear having old Mitchells and Abu's and a few cane and glass rods.
Similarly I've moved over to doing a bit of coarse fishing, that Mk IV is a classic.

And, I was only speaking to my better half around Christmas that I fancied a trip to Montana too!

Perhaps our paths have crossed on angling forums.

It's been a few years since I've fished, but used to fish along the Ouse here and in some of the larger drains. Nothing particularly serious, but it was a nice way to get out for a few hours and watch the world go by.

Before I learnt to drive I used to cycle to wherever I was fishing. One particular place involved having to climb over a really rickety stile, which meant I couldn't get the bike over - it was precarious enough for me. End result, had to lock bike to fence, whereupon some of the local kids used to delight in taking apart the bits that weren't fastened down. It was one of the reasons I haven't been down there for a while. I did learn pretty quickly how to put my bike back together before I could cycle the 6 miles back home...

Eels xx( good sport in the water hate them out of it

You just *knew* when you'd hooked an eel.

Actually, they're very tasty, especially smoked. I designed and built my own smoking chimney so's I could do my own as they're ££££ to buy.

My claim to fame is a gdon't have rom Leicester called Dave Wesson won the world championship for Australia in the early nineties .While he was reigning champ I drew next to him on a canal match in Leicester and beat him :becool: his 4.5 oz was not enough to beat my massive 6 oz  it was a hard match

My dad won a match with one 3.5oz gudgeon.. on a fen drain near Kirton.
20 odd in the match for 5 hrs...you just get them amaizing days
municiple club anual away day fish and pi55 up..

I stopped to chat with an angler on the drain near Pondersbridge while out on a ride recently.

He was telling me that tench to 8lb are taken from the drains on a semi-regular basis!

The biggest problem I can see is locating the fish, as there are zero features on most of them. He seemed to think that a lengthy, concentrated pre-baiting regime is what's required.
