It was our club AGM last night and as usual I managed to end up with another job, I'm now editor of the newsletter.

I've put a draft together today with the usual general info, events notices, race reports, chairmans spiel, requests for marshals etc. Anyone got any ideas on how to jazz it up a bit? Got any cycling related jokes? Links to places I can nick stuff from?

I'd like to make it a bit more entertaining as all the standard stuff is on the website and/or forum already.

Well a fat lot of help you lot were!

My first effort is on the club website www.sotonia.co.uk (newletter tab on left) if anyone in the Southampton area is interested in a local club.

That's not a newsletter Dave - that's a book!
Well done - there is a lot going on, obviously!
As for jazzing it up: I think I would have a bit more variety in page format. The logo, which is an important ID might become more of a watermark, with just a hint, a reference to the club colurs (I know the background does that for you). A slightly larger point size, lose the serifs for the body of the letter...larger 'headlines. Really, it's a monthly newspaper - there's so much there!
As for features, think of pen pictures of the members - what they do, photo, history etc. Maybe ask them ten questions? (Lots of the Sunday supps. do this sort of thing). Hobbies. (There's always one person who grows outsize marrows )
Get a young member involved perhaps, ask them 'what's hot' and then do the spade work to find out about their suggestions, then publish them...)
Photo competitions - sponsored prizes.
You might even like to go to work once in a while too!
Good luck.

Couple of good ideas there, thanks.

Luckilly it's quarterly, not monthly so I'll be able to take a bit more time on the next one. As for work, where do you think I was doing it?!

If it's a PDF and below 2MB and you want to get some more eyes on it, PM me and we'll see about adding a 'Newsletters' category to the downloads section here so you can share it directly with CC'ers.

That's if you want to, that is? ...

Cheers,
Shaun
