I've just finished an article on cycle commuters in London and thought you'd be interested in some of the key facts. First, here are the overall stats;
  • There are +25% more commuters in London than 10 years ago.
  • There are more people who travel to work in London and the South East (7.8m) as in the entire Regions of the North East, Yorkshire and North West (6.5m).
  • Car Driver numbers increased by just +1% compared to the average for England (+16%).
  • The ratio using Public Transport surpassed half the total number of commuters for the first time.
And now specifically for cycling;
  • Cycling commuters more than doubled (+109%) over the past decade.
  • Cycle commuters in Hackney and Islington outnumber Car Drivers.
  • London (4.3%) has the highest ratio of cycle commuters in England (3.1%).
  • Three Boroughs triple the number of cycle commuters; Tower Hamlets, Hackney & City of London.
  • Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy is working; Car Drivers held at 2001 levels, Cycle commuters doubled, Public Transport users more than half of all commuters.

The only way I could cycle to work more would be if I had to work 6 or 7 days a week as opposed to the 5 I do now.

Similar to Touche (although I often work eight day weeks). The things that come closest to discouraging me are road safety and road conditions. I recently had a spell of commuting 18 miles each way across London. The state of the road surface in some boroughs meant I was quite beaten up by the time I got home, the constant jarring was almost too much to bear. I'm fortunate and could swap to a comfy (stupidly expensive for the purpose) alternative but it would have stopped me if I only had my commuter to rely on. An occasional phase of unpleasant, late night punishment passes will wear me down a bit too, but I usually get over that.

As a temporarily lapsed commuter, I can say definitively that the things which would most improve my commuting would be:

1. Reduction in motor traffic
2. Improved driving skills
3. Policing stepped up
4. Improved infrastructure (particularly junction) design - NOT segregation!

As i visit numerous customers in the city - i really need better changing facilities at our head office (London Wall), the 22 miles each way is great and i do it 2-3 times a week during the warmer/dryer months. road surfaces are getting poorer by the year, more needs to be spent on keeping them in better condition (stating the obvious). London is pretty good for cycling with lower car speeds and designated cycle paths & lanes even in central London where road space is at a premium. drivers here are more cycle/pedestrian/motorbike/rickshaw (west end) aware

I hope to start properly commuting by bike in a week or so's time, for me it's more finding a set of hairy things, to get back on the road during rush hour, I will be riding from 5.45-6am and coming home from 5pm, happy to ride on the road during the weekends and have done a fair few rides..

on top of that, cars parking in cycle lanes which i have noticed a few times, and changing facilites, being in the wharf I have to join a gym to be able to shower and get changed, it's cheaper than the tube but it's still going to cost me to ride a bike :smile:

There is just wilderness outside the M25...

I voted for cash, I will cycle anyway but for the toffs down south to pay me to do it, wonderful.

I wonder what that would be as a % e.g. 20% of L+SE commuters do so by bike compare to 10% of NE,Ys and NW commuters

We know there are more people in the SE!

All of the above.
